Advantages

Increases the yield of bentonite.
Selectively flocculates low yield solids.
Can be added to bentonite during milling operations or applied on-site.
For use in weighted and unweighted muds.
Can be used for interim viscosity increases.

Application Approximately 2 pounds of DX-Extend should be added for every 5-8 sacks of bentonite. The optimum amount of DX-Extend should be determined by pilot testing with the bentonite that is on-site. Calcium levels should be treated to below 200 ppm and preferably less than 100 ppm. The pH can be increased to 9.5 to 10.5 with caustic soda (after the calcium has been reduced). Since DX-Extend coats solids in the system, continued addition is required as solids are removed. DX-Extend can also be used to generate quick increases in viscosity for logging activities at the addition rate of 2-3 lbs/100 barrels. The extending capabilities of DX-Extend decrease with higher chloride levels. Use of DX- Extend by direct addition should be discontinued at chloride levels greater than 10,000 ppm. However, use of DX-Extend can continue in the prehydration tanks for the bentonite.
